Why More People Than Ever Are Choosing Moissanite

Brilliant Earth - Thu, 01/14/2021 - 14:00

While diamonds remain the most traditional gemstone used in engagement rings, one diamond alternative is becoming an increasingly popular choice – for all the best reasons.

Moissanite is a gemstone born from the stars. It was first discovered in 1893 after French scientist Henri Moissan found particles of the gem in a crater created by a meteorite that fell to Earth. Henri and other scientists of the time initially thought the particles to be diamonds, but later determined that the crystals were composed of silicon carbide.  Today, moissanite is sought after for its resemblance to diamonds as well as its unique sparkle. Beyond their diamond-like appearance, moissanites are known for their fiery brilliance, uncompromised durability and attractive price, making them an increasingly popular choice for engagement rings. Learn more about why people are choosing moissanites below!

Responsible Sourcing

Natural moissanite is incredibly rare, most moissanites on the market today are lab created. Because they are grown in controlled environments using advanced technology, moissanites require absolutely no mining to produce. For that reason, their origins are easily traceable. Fine jewelry made with moissanites and recycled metals is a responsible choice.

Fiery Brilliance

If you love sparkle, a moissanite might just be the perfect gemstone for you. Sparkle is measured by brilliance, which is a stone’s refractive index. Moissanites exhibit a heightened brilliance, as their faceting patterns differ from diamonds. The striking surface sparkle of a moissanite emits fiery, rainbow flashes that dazzle in the light. While moissanites are labeled as “colorless”, the gems can still project a yellow or grayish hue in certain lights. This characteristic sets them apart from diamonds, and many love the rainbow of colors a moissanite reflects.

Uncompromised Durability

Gemstone hardness is a measurement of its ability to resist scratching or other damage. On the Mohs scale, moissanite scores a 9.25, an excellent score that makes it one of the hardest substances on earth. For reference, diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness and sapphires are a 9. Moissanite engagement rings are suitable for everyday wear and hold up marvelously over time. Your moissanite gemstone will never get cloudy or change color and requires occasional cleaning to maintain a pristine and sparkling appearance.

Attractive Price

Moissanites are an attractive cost-friendly option for many couples as you can create your dream engaging ring without veering outside your budget or compromising center gemstone size. Moissanites are significantly lower in price compared to diamonds of similar shape and dimensions, making them a budget-friendly alternative to a diamond. Moissanite gems vary in price only based on size and whether the stone is Premium or Super Premium.

7 Stunning Diamond Alternatives

Brilliant Earth - Thu, 01/07/2021 - 23:49

While diamonds are still the most popular gemstone used in engagement rings, other gemstones and diamond alternatives are becoming increasingly sought after!

In brilliant colors and stunning cuts, colored gemstones offer an element of distinction to classic engagement ring settings. Gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, and rubies have been prized since antiquity and can make for a stunning statement. However, if you love the look of a diamond but are deterred by factors such as price point, gemstones like moissanite and white sapphire are excellent alternatives that feature their own unique properties.

There are no rules when it comes to selecting a gemstone for your engagement ring. What matters is that you and your partner love it! Learn about some of our favorite diamond alternatives below.

Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 by a French scientist named Henri Moissan, who later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Initially, moissanites were thought to be diamonds, but it was later determined that the crystals were composed of silicon carbide. At 9.5 on the Mohs scale, moissanites are the second hardest mineral in the world behind diamonds. Moissanite rings look stunning on their own in solitaire designs or alongside diamond accents. Learn more about moissanites vs. diamonds.

Until the twentieth century, sapphires were more popular than diamonds as a featured gem in engagement rings. Typically thought of as royal blue, sapphires also appear in other hues such as peach, pink, teal, yellow and white. Aside from their beauty, a sapphire is a great choice for an engagement ring because they’re among the world’s must durable naturally occurring elements, coming in at 9 on the Mohs scale. The strength helps them stand up to the everyday wear required of an engagement ring. Their dazzling colors and lustrous beauty make sapphires an excellent diamond alternative for an engagement ring.

Aquamarine, meaning “water of the sea”, is a beautiful pale blue semi-precious gemstone. These gorgeous gems are part of the beryl family of minerals, which also includes emeralds. Aquamarines are beloved for combining a beautiful shade of blue with exceptional clarity, and look gorgeous in many engagement ring settings!

Blush-hued morganite looks beautiful as the centerpiece of an engagement ring. Morganite is a pink to peach variety of beryl. Apart from their beautiful color, they are also treasured for their sparkling clarity and high degree of brilliance. Morganite looks lovely when paired with rose gold as the two naturally complement each other’s warm undertones.

Valued throughout history, emeralds are one of the rarest gemstones and make a beautiful choice for an engagement ring center gemstone. Emeralds are the gems of royalty, and are the most well known and highly prized of green gemstones. Unlike diamonds, whose clarity must be evaluated using a 10x magnification, emerald clarity is graded with the naked eye. Legend has it that wearing emeralds can give you the ability to foresee the future and see the truth. It has also been believed that emerald has the power to cure disease and protect against evil!

Rubies have been valued for their rare beauty for thousands of years. Because red has long been associated with love and passion, a ruby makes a fitting focal point for an engagement ring. A ruby’s crimson red color looks excellent in vintage rings  as well as modern styles featuring lustrous precious metals.

Vibrant amethysts come in colors ranging from deep purple to the palest shades of pastel lavender and even pink. The most valuable hue is a strong reddish purple shade, but we love every shade of amethyst! Lavender hues look particularly stunning in amethyst engagement rings when complemented by diamond accents. Most amethysts have excellent clarity, with no inclusions visible to the naked eye, and are available in a variety of cuts and carat weights.

A Guy’s (Unbiased) Engagement Ring Buying Guide

Brilliant Earth - Thu, 01/07/2021 - 17:49

So you are in the market for an engagement ring, or think you might be—congratulations!  Although we don’t know your girlfriend, we’re pretty certain she’ll be overjoyed when you ask her to marry you.

Ideally, she’ll also be giddy with excitement over the ring you’ve chosen, and that’s where we can help. Yes, Brilliant Earth sells engagement rings but we are setting aside our interests to give you an unbiased “just the facts” guide to choosing an engagement ring that your future fiancé will love, and that will get you the most value for your money.  Here are the decisions ahead of you, and our tips on how to make them:

Decide on a Budget

While we firmly believe an engagement ring’s worth comes from the meaning behind it, money does play a major role in determining which ring to propose with. Deciding on a budget early can allow you to fully explore all your options when it comes to center gem characteristics and ring designs. There is no hard and fast rule about how much you “should” spend on an engagement ring, other than that you should spend what feels comfortable for you. We can assist you in finding a diamond or other gemstone that balances size with quality at a price that works within your budget, and can tell you about lab-created diamonds or diamond substitutes like moissanites, which can be a budget-friendly options. You can also consider a variety of flexible payment options, including bank wire, layaway, and financing.

Choose a Ring Style

Selecting an engagement ring style may be the hardest part of buying an engagement ring. For guidance, think about the types of clothing and accessories your significant other gravitates towards—this should give you some clues as to whether they’d prefer a ring that’s classic, modern, nature-inspired, glamorous, or some combination of those. Make sure to stay alert to any hints your partner might be dropping! If you two have discussed an engagement, there’s a good chance their preferences are saved to a Pinterest board. To make the decision less stressful, we offer 30 day free returns and exchanges.

Popular Engagement Ring Settings Waverly Diamond Ring

This halo setting features scalloped pavé diamonds that encircle the center gem and adorn the band. A diamond-encrusted gallery makes this ring truly spectacular and adds extra sparkle to your center diamond.

Petite Twisted Vine Diamond Ring

This beautiful nature-inspired ring features a shimmering strand of pavé diamonds entwined with a lustrous ribbon of precious metal.

Ballad Diamond Ring

A perfectly classic engagement ring, the Ballad Diamond Ring features sparkling scalloped pavé diamonds that extend one half of the way around its delicate band.

Choose a Gemstone

You know that the most classic engagement ring style features a center diamond, but you may not know whether your girlfriend craves that style or wants something more unique. We can tell you this: close to 90% of engagement rings feature a diamond, and sapphires are the second most common engagement ring gemstone. If your girlfriend’s taste runs to the unconventional, then she may prefer something other than a diamond or sapphire engagement ring—but based on the numbers, a diamond or sapphire is a very safe bet.

Diamonds and sapphires are also the hardest gemstones (Diamonds rank 10 and sapphires rank 9 on a 1-10 mineral grading scale called the Mohs scale of hardness) meaning that they’ll hold up well to the everyday wear required of engagement rings. Sapphires cost less than diamonds, so choosing a center sapphire allows you to get a bigger gem for your budget. Although you probably think of sapphires as being a deep blue, they also come in yellow, pink, white, and a variety of other colors.

Learn about the 4 Cs

If you and your partner are set on a diamond engagement ring, it is important to know how diamonds are classified. Diamonds are graded according the four Cs: carat, cut, clarity, and color. Striking a balance between these characteristics can help ensure you get the best diamond for your engagement ring.

A diamond’s cut is directly related to its overall beauty. When a diamond has been correctly cut, the diamond’s ability to reflect and refract light is greatly enhanced. By understanding the way that light moves through diamond crystals, modern diamond cutters have established a specific set of proportions and angles that are known to harness the diamond’s internal brilliance and to show it in its best light. Learn more about diamond cuts.

A diamond’s color is caused by natural trace elements of nitrogen that were present when the diamond formed under the Earth’s crust. A diamond with less color will exhibit greater brilliance and fire, be considered rarer, and therefore be of more value. Learn more about diamond color.

With most diamonds, there is more than meets the eye! The presence of natural inclusions and blemishes on and within a diamond impacts its appearance and value. Inclusions may be crystals of a foreign material or structural imperfections such as tiny cracks, known as feathers, which can appear whitish or cloudy. Often times the inclusions are microscopic diamonds that were absorbed by the larger crystal before the diamond was carried to the surface of the Earth. The quantity, size, color, location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions all affect the final clarity grade of a diamond. Diamonds with no or few inclusions are considered particularly rare and highly valued.

Carat is the most visually apparent factor when comparing diamonds since it it a way of measuring the overall weight of the diamond. Learn how carat weight is used to measure gemstones.

Select a Gemstone Shape

Diamonds are cut into ten standard shapes, and round is by far the most common choice, making up 75% of all diamond purchases. In part because they’re so popular, round diamonds cost more than other shapes. In fact, you can save up to 40% by choosing a non-round diamond. Some non-round shapes that are also very popular, but less pricey, are the princess cut (which is square) and the cushion cut (somewhere in between a round and a square, featuring softly tapered edges). Oval cut, pear cut, emerald cut, and radiant cut diamonds are also very popular shapes.

Choose a Precious Metal

The main choices for engagement ring metals are platinum, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. Platinum and white gold are the most popular choices, but rose gold is continuing to rise in popularity. Platinum and white gold look very similar, but platinum is more durable and costs about 50% more. To get a sense of what type of precious metal your girlfriend would prefer, pay attention to the jewelry she currently wears.

Consider Whether to Go Custom

If you’re an artistic type or if it’s important to you to propose with a ring that’s completely unique, consider collaborating with a jewelry designer to create a custom engagement ring.

Figure Out Her Ring Size

Determining her ring size without asking is tricky, but not impossible. The most common women’s ring size is 6-6.5, and you want to err on the large side. You could sneak a ring from her jewelry box and take it to a jeweler to have it sized, or trace one of her rings on a piece of paper. For more strategies, check out How to Find Out Her Ring Size Without Her Knowing. Most rings can be resized, so check your jeweler’s resize policy.

Consider a Semi-Surprise

If you know you want to surprise your girlfriend with a ring when you propose, but are daunted by having to determine the right ring style and size, consider purchasing a diamond or other gemstone and having it set in a temporary ring setting. You can then have the gemstone re-set into a setting of her choice once you’re engaged. We let people have a gemstone set into our classic 18k Gold 2mm Comfort Fit ring, then return it within 60 days to have the gem re-set into a ring that’s the perfect style and size.

Protect Your Investment

It’s important to protect your jewelry from the unexpected with jewelry insurance. Jewelry insurance protects your Brilliant Earth jewelry from circumstances that most homeowner’s and renter’s insurance policies don’t cover. We include a complimentary insurance appraisal with engagement and wedding rings that have not been modified.

Simulant Diamonds vs. Lab Created Diamonds

Brilliant Earth - Wed, 01/06/2021 - 03:02

There is a lot of confusing and conflicting information about diamond simulants and lab created (also called “cultured”) diamonds. Despite what you may have heard, diamond simulants and lab created diamonds are not the same.

We want to help you sort through the confusion to better understand the options available, and more importantly, what you are actually buying.

Simulant Diamonds

Diamond simulants are manufactured to look like diamonds but are composed of very different materials.  Although simulants share some similarities in appearance to a diamond, they are generally readily identifiable as stand-ins.  The most well-known option is cubic zirconia, or CZ, which is a crystal form of zirconium oxide.  Moissanite is an alternative to CZ, and is both durable and low cost. This simulant is newer, boasts slightly more sparkle, and is composed of the crystal carbide.

It is important to note the vast distinction between simulant diamonds, such as those mentioned above, and lab diamonds. Lab diamonds are man-made diamonds that consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond crystal structure. Simulants do not have the same chemical and physical properties as diamonds, and merely imitate the appearance of a diamond. Therefore, simulants sell at much lower prices than cultured diamonds.

When is a simulant diamond useful

If you love a particular setting and/or have your heart set on a certain size diamond, wallet-friendly simulants may allow you to have a ring that you adore without having to wait. You can upgrade with a diamond—cultured or mined—when the time is right for you.
Additionally, if you travel frequently, for work or leisure, having a ring set with a simulant may come in handy.  You can leave home without worrying about having your diamond engagement ring lost or stolen.

Lab Created Diamonds

Brilliant Earth’s lab created diamonds  have the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as our natural diamonds. Even when using professional gemological equipment, lab created diamonds are nearly impossible to differentiate from natural diamonds and can only be identified with extensive scientific testing using specialized equipment. Lab created diamonds should come with a gem certification identifying them as laboratory grown.

Arriving at a process that allows for the same composition in lab created and mined diamonds has taken decades, and not compromising quality has been worth the wait.

When to look for lab created

Lab created diamonds are an appealing option for many brides and grooms—they are slightly more affordable than their naturally-mined counterparts and are starting to become available in larger sizes.  Brilliant Earth is pleased to offer a wide selection of colorless lab diamonds.

Of course, this process isn’t—and shouldn’t be—all about cost.  Brides and grooms looking to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing the look or feel of their diamond may be particularly drawn to lab created diamonds.  Ultimately, selecting and wearing an engagement ring, and the diamond or gemstone sits at its center, should be a deeply personal and romantic experience.  We would be honored to help you navigate—and enjoy—this incredible milestone.

Men’s Wedding Bands: The Complete Guide

Brilliant Earth - Mon, 01/04/2021 - 18:19

A guy usually puts a ton of thought into selecting an engagement ring for his fiancé, but when it’s time to choose his own wedding band he may realize that he’s overwhelmed with the options.

If that describes you, don’t let your ring be an afterthought! Since you’ll be wearing it for the rest of your life, and it may even be the only piece of jewelry you wear, you should love your wedding band every bit as much as your fiancée loves her carefully selected rings. There are six things to consider when choosing wedding bands for men: width, metal choice, fit, finish, detailing and engraving.

How wide do you want your ring to be? Try on a few men’s wedding bands in a variety of different widths to decide what you like best. Wider rings tend to be more expensive (since they require a larger quantity of precious metal), but you can balance size and price by choosing a metal that’s within your budget. For example, white gold looks very similar to platinum, but costs less.

Metal Choice

The metals traditionally used for men’s wedding rings are platinum, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. Here are the benefits of each:

Platinum is extremely durable and is among the rarest elements in the earth’s crust.  It is also hypoallergenic and almost never causes skin reactions.

White Gold

White gold is gold plated in rhodium, a member of the platinum family, which gives it a brilliant white color similar to platinum’s but at a lower price point (note: the rhodium plating on white gold jewelry may need to be replaced after a decade or so).

Yellow Gold

Yellow gold gives off a subtle, warm glow and is a classic option.

Rose Gold

Rose gold is a beautiful, less common choice and creates a unique vintage effect.  It’s perfect for a groom who wants a more distinctive look.

Can’t decide?  Consider a mixed metal wedding band. No matter which metal you choose, we recommend recycled precious metal as an eco-friendly choice.

The edges of men’s wedding bands can be curved or flat, forming right angles to the sides of the ring. Our popular Comfort Fit band has gently rounded edges, which can make it a good choice for men who are concerned about how it will feel to wear a ring every day. Try on a number of different rings to get a sense of which fit feels right to you.

Finish describes the surface texture of a ring’s metal.

These are the terms to know:

High Polish

High Polish is the most traditional choice and describes metal with a reflective finish.

Matte is a less reflective finish with an understated, modern feel.

Combination wedding bands combine both matte and high polish textures.

Hammered rings look as if a tiny hammer has pounded the metal to create a textured effect. They are popular with men who want a unique, eye-catching look.

Not so long ago there were very few options in men’s wedding bands beyond choice of metal, but these days you can have a very unique men’s wedding ring. Add style to your ring with diamond or sapphire accents, like a subtle vertical stripe of sparkling gems or a Celtic knot design.

Whether you choose a ring that’s understated and classic or more unique and eye-catching, there are endless ways to personalize the band with engraving. The date of your wedding, your fiancé’s name or initials, a word, phrase or song lyric that’s central to your love story—engraving any of these on your ring will lend it extra meaning. You could even have your fiancé’s fingerprint engraved into the metal—what could be more romantic than choosing to keep a reminder of your other half close to you every day?  You can have either the inside or the outside of your ring engraved, depending on whether you want to keep the engraving private or show it off to the world.

Custom Designs

To wear a ring that truly reflects your one-of-a-kind personality, consider having your wedding band custom designed. Our jewelry design experts will help you bring your vision to life, and can suggest styles and effects that will express your unique style, such as nature-inspired motifs, antique designs, or custom patterns or symbols that honor your heritage or history.

Final Thoughts

It’s a great time to be shopping for men’s wedding rings—there are more options than ever, and today’s grooms are going beyond the standard simple bands to choose styles that reflect their unique personalities and tastes. If you want to talk about your options, please contact us. We are happy to guide you through the process of selecting or creating your perfect wedding band.

How to Find Out Your Partner’s Ring Size Without Them Knowing

Brilliant Earth - Mon, 01/04/2021 - 17:00

Brilliant Earth jewelry expert Jessica Anand is frequently asked by our customers about how they can find out their partner’s ring size without them knowing. Here we’ve shared some of Jessica’s best tips and tricks!

Request a Free Ring Sizer

We are happy to send you a complimentary plastic ring sizer so that you can easily measure your ring size at home. Plastic ring sizers shipped to the US and Canada will arrive within five to seven business days and delivery time to Australia may take longer.

Request Free Ring Sizer -->

Request Ring Sizer 1. Be Subtle

If you are absolutely set on a surprise proposal but you still want to find out their ring size directly from the source, ask your significant other in a very subtle, smooth way. If you’re proposing to your girlfriend, you can pretend, for example, that you are going to buy a ring for mom/sister/aunt/niece or even yourself. Make sure that this pretend recipient is someone whose hands are similar in size to your girlfriend. Casually ask what her ring size is for reference. If you really want to beef up the ruse, purchase an inexpensive ring and show it to them. Have them try it on and everything! Maybe afterward you can actually give that ring to your mom/sister/aunt/niece to appease your guilty conscience!

2. Ask Her Friends

A great way to find out your partner’s ring size is to ask one of her friends. Friends occasionally have this insight! And, if the friend doesn’t know right away, she can be the one to ask (nonchalantly). Even better, ask the friend to take your partner engagement ring shopping “for fun.” Have them get professionally sized and ask their friend to report back to you. It’s best to choose a friend who might have once had acting aspirations!

3. Borrow One of Their Rings

Another method is to snag one of their old rings for a day. You need to be careful with this method because it might backfire on you! Make sure that you grab a ring that your partner wears on a similarly sized finger, the ring finger of their right hand being the optimal choice. Even if you bring in a thumb ring we can usually come up with a close approximation of what size their ring finger will be. If you choose this option, make sure that you choose a ring that isn’t overly important to them and wouldn’t cause any emotional distress if they notice it missing!

4. Leave a Trace

If you are terrified of losing one of their rings try this method instead. Take one of their rings and place it on a piece of paper. Draw a circle on the inside and outside of the ring. Do this several times to make sure that your ring traces look consistent. We can usually figure out the diameter of their ring from your sketch!

5. Enlist a Friend

If one of your partner’s friends is engaged, ask her friend to let your girlfriend try on the ring. This will put you in a ballpark size range to start out with. You can also use this as an opportunity to ask what she thought of her friend’s ring (in private) and try to do a little sleuthing as to what style of ring she would like for herself.

6. Compare Fingers

This method is a little more difficult, but if you are desperate, go ahead and try it out! When you are holding their hand, see if one of their fingers is similar in size to a finger of yours. For example, their ring finger might be as big as your pinky. This method isn’t amazingly accurate, but the more information we have on their ring size the closer we can get!

7. Ask Your Partner!

There are some people in this world who like to do things the hard way, and then there are those who are very straightforward. If you and your partner have been discussing marriage for quite some time, ask them outright what their ring size is! Don’t worry though— you can still have the element of surprise. After all, they don’t know when you’re going to ask, or how! If your partner doesn’t know their ring size, they can find it using our printable ring sizing guide.

Keep in Mind:

The two most accurate ways to confirm ring size are to come in and have your partner sized by us in person or have them visit a local jeweler. Using one or several of the methods above will result in a very good approximation, but there is always the risk that it will be slightly off.

Please note that for custom designed rings, we highly recommend visiting a local jeweler or coming in and having their finger sized with us, as custom pieces are final sale and may not be able to be resized in the future. Err on a larger size so that it will be guaranteed to slip over her finger when you propose.

Interesting Ring Size Facts:
  • Our dominant hands tend to be slightly bigger (so make sure you are measuring for their left!)
  • The most common women’s ring size is 6 to 6.5.
  • The most common men’s ring size is 10.
  • Wider rings have a tighter fit than thinner bands, so if you borrow a ring for us to measure, try to make sure that it is the same width as the ring you plan on purchasing.
  • Brilliant Earth is happy to ship you a free ring sizer, so that you can measure your ring size in the comfort of your home!

What if I just can’t figure out the size?

If you simply can’t figure out the size or you don’t want to risk it, consider choosing a temporary setting to propose with. Our temporary setting is our 18K White Gold 2mm Comfort Fit Ring. You have sixty days to propose, have your partner properly sized, and send the ring back. Once you have their perfect size, we can set your diamond in your ideal setting.  This way they get to see the diamond you chose, but there isn’t the risk of having to resize the actual setting. Please contact us about this option, so we can explain the exact process to you! This is also a great option for those who don’t know whether to purchase an engagement ring before or after proposing.

Good luck!

How to Drop a Hint About Your Favorite Engagement Ring Styles

Brilliant Earth - Wed, 12/30/2020 - 22:04

While we believe an engagement ring’s appeal should come from the meaning behind it, we know how important it is to wear something that’s true to your style.

An engagement ring can be a big investment, and if your partner is making this purchase they will want to pop the question with a ring you’ll love for years to come! So why not give them a gentle push in the right direction? Dropping hints the right way can help make sure you and your partner are aligned when it comes to engagement ring styles.

Below are 3 great ways to drop hints:

1. Pin it

Brilliant Earth’s Pinterest page is an excellent place for major engagement ring inspiration. Once you have a clear idea on the engagement ring style you’d like, save these pins to a board and share it with your S.O. This can either be done by sharing a public board’s link or inviting them to be a collaborator on a private board.

Tip: It’s important that this board is separate from any other engagement ring inspiration boards you may have, as throwing other styles into the mix could get confusing. If there are particular characteristics you’re set on, i.e. rose gold with a round diamond, make sure these two features are consistent throughout all of your pins. This will help to eliminate any confusion!

2. Send a DM

While there are many ways to drop hints, Instagram makes the process more straightforward than ever. Rather than tagging your S.O. in an Instagram post, send it to them via direct message so they can reference it later.

Tip: If you’re still narrowing down engagement ring design styles, we suggest taking advantage of Instagram’s saving feature. While virtual window shopping through Brilliant Earth’s Instagram feed, save your favorites to an “Engagement Ring Inspiration” collection. Only direct message your final picks to your S.O.

3. Click “Drop a Hint”

After you’ve created your ideal engagement ring, easily share the final product with your significant other in an email using our “Drop a Hint” feature.

Tip: Use the message field to give your hint some cute context, i.e. “Look at the beautiful ring I created. Should I be a jewelry designer? I’m in love with it!”

Can You Tell Which Diamonds are Lab Grown?

Brilliant Earth - Wed, 12/30/2020 - 15:44

Although grown by scientists instead of created in the earth’s crust, lab diamonds are absolutely real diamonds—they display the same chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds.

Even expert gemologists can’t tell the difference with the naked eye, but just for fun we’re offering you the chance to guess. The engagement rings on this page either feature a lab grown or natural mined center diamond. See if your instincts can determine which is which! Learn more about lab diamonds on our website.

Classic Round Lab Diamonds

If you’re looking for a lab grown diamond in a classic round brilliant cut, you’re in luck, because we have an expansive selection of round lab diamonds. When the process of growing a diamond was first invented, labs were only capable of creating small diamonds, but today you can purchase lab diamonds in large sizes well over 3 carats! (This picture of our 14K rose gold Twilight Diamond Ring features a naturally mined round diamond.)

Lab Diamonds in Fancy Shapes & Colors

Lab diamonds are also available in a variety of shapes including emerald, oval, cushion, radiant, pear, marquise, princess and asscher. If you love colored gemstones, consider a lab created colored diamond in fancy shades like yellow, pink, blue, and orange. (This is our 14K rose gold Willow Diamond Ring set with a lab created emerald diamond.)

Lab Diamonds with Lab Created Accents

If you’d like your ring to feature lab created diamonds or gemstones, you can have a lab diamond set in a ring featuring lab accent diamonds. We also offer wedding bands set with lab created gemstones and diamonds. (This 18K white gold Soleil Diamond Ring is set with an oval lab created diamond with lab diamond accents.)

Natural Diamonds vs. Lab Grown Diamonds

If you couldn’t tell the lab diamonds from the natural ones, we’re not surprised—and if you could you’re just a lucky guesser! Lab diamonds are created in high-temperature, high-pressure chambers that reproduce the conditions in the earth’s crust. The result is carbon atoms arranged in the structure of a diamond crystal and diamonds that are every bit as magical as the ones created naturally millions of years ago and mined today. (Our 18K yellow gold Primrose Diamond Ring set with a natural princess diamond.)

Attractive Prices

Lab diamonds usually cost about 30% less than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality. But these diamonds are every bit as luxurious as their natural counterparts, since their dazzling beauty and durability are the same. It is important to know that there’s a big difference between lab created diamonds and diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite. These simulants are not made of the carbon crystals, and do not possess the same brilliance as diamonds. For that reason, simulants sell at much lower prices than lab created diamonds.

Final Thoughts

Browse our collection of lab created diamonds, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for do not hesitate to contact us and we can help you source your ideal diamond.

Top Engagement Ring Trends for 2021

Brilliant Earth - Thu, 12/24/2020 - 01:27

Just like us, we’re sure you’re ready to ring in the new year!

At Brilliant Earth we spend our days helping couples select and design the rings that symbolize their love and commitment and capture their individual style.  When doing so, we are always on the lookout to identify engagement ring and wedding ring trends as soon as they emerge.

We’ve pulled sales data and the expert opinions of our jewelry specialists to make some educated predictions about what will be some of the most popular engagement ring styles in 2021. Read on to learn more about what we think will be next year’s favorite styles!

Gender Fluid Ring Styles

In 2020 we launched The Mx Collection, in which our designers sought to blur the lines between traditionally feminine and masculine styles to create fresh, gender neutral styles.  We also launched Rings for Everyone, which offers a more inclusive size range for diamond rings and wedding bands. Wider and more substantial bands in particular seem to be increasingly popular as part of a ring stack or wedding look. We expect gender fluid jewelry to increase in popularity in 2021 and for many years to come.

Yellow Gold Rings

While rose gold was the favorite metal over the last decade, yellow gold has seen a huge resurgence in the last year and has been favored by celebs such as Jessica Hart, Jasmine Tookes, and Jenna Ushkowitz. Brilliant Earth customers are also loving this look, especially in the last 6 months where yellow gold has grown over three times faster than other metals. We expect the sunny and warm luster of yellow gold to continue to trend in 2021.

Elongated Fancy Shaped Diamonds

Fancy shaped diamonds are any diamond shape other than classic round brilliant, and elongated fancy shapes including oval, pear, emerald, marquise, and elongated cushion and radiant diamonds were particularly popular in the last year. We expect their popularity to remain strong, particularly as we saw celebrities like Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Nicola Peltz, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Grimaldi, Jourdan Dunn, and others receive elongated fancy shaped diamond rings this year.

Contoured Ring Stacks

Stacked and nested wedding looks is a trend we’ve seen crop up in the past few years, and we only see it gaining steam. Stacking contoured bands is a great way to making a statement and highlight your center gem in a unique way. We think stacking thinner and wider bands together to create more weight and dimension to a stacked look will pop in particular in 2021, allowing more opportunity for individual expression.

Surprise Diamond Details

Who doesn’t love an element of surprise, particularly when that surprise is more sparkling diamonds? Hidden diamond halos, diamond accented galleries, and other unique details crafted beneath a ring’s center gemstone add extra sparkle and uniqueness to otherwise understated styles. Because these sparkling hidden accents are frequently paired with classic solitaire styles, we anticipate these modern classics will remain popular for years to come.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of our predictions – have you seen people get engaged with these styles recently? Let us know your favorite trends in the comments below or on our InstagramFacebook, or Twitter!

Cushion diamonds, as well as other fancy shaped diamonds like oval diamonds, pear diamonds, and emerald diamonds, are rising in popularity among our customers and celebrities alike!

Timeless cushion cut diamonds and gemstones feature large facets that maximize brilliance, and rounded corners that create a soft and romantic feel. Cushion diamonds are a classic choice since they are a diamond shape that has been sought after for centuries. This makes them particularly well-suited for romantic and vintage-inspired styles like halo engagement rings or classic three stone ring settings.

Although cushion diamonds have been popular for many years, we’re seeing contemporary ring settings bring fresh life to this gorgeous and classic diamond shape. Read on to discover some of our favorite cushion engagement ring settings!

Radiance Diamond Ring

This chic new take on a classic three stone design features scalloped pavé diamond accents along the band and claw prongs embracing the center gemstone.

Petite Shared Prong Diamond Ring

Fortuna Diamond Ring

This exceptional setting features a halo of diamond accents that curves gently around the center gem for a distinctive look. Two rows of pavé diamonds sparkle on the contemporary split shank band, while a surprise row of diamond accents on the bridge completes this glamorous look.
